The Democratic Alliance (DA) in South Africa’s Free State province is mourning the death of Michael Thulani Mbana, a local political leader who was fatally shot outside his home in Zamdela, near Sasolburg, on Monday evening, October 26, 2026. His death has left political colleagues and community members grieving as police work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Mbana served as the DA’s caucus leader in Metsimaholo Local Municipality and was the party’s candidate for Ward 14 in the upcoming local government elections. His killing has raised concerns among residents and political representatives, particularly because it occurred shortly before voters were due to go to the polls.

The DA confirmed his death in a statement issued on October 27, paying tribute to his commitment to public service and community representation. Police have opened a murder investigation, but the motive remains unknown.

Michael Thulani Mbana Cause of Death: What Happened in Zamdela?

According to information released by Free State police, Mbana died from multiple gunshot wounds sustained during a shooting at his residence in Taylor Park, Zamdela.

The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 9:40 p.m. on October 26. Police said two unidentified men approached the property and called out to Mbana. When he came towards them, one of the suspects allegedly produced a firearm and shot him several times at close range.

The two men subsequently fled on foot. Mbana died at the scene.

Authorities registered a murder case and launched an investigation to identify the suspects and determine what led to the attack. At the time of the initial police reports, no confirmed information had been released identifying those responsible.

Although the killing occurred in the run-up to the local government elections scheduled for November 4, investigators have not established a political motive. Police have urged the public to avoid speculation while detectives pursue the available leads.

The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation, and further information will depend on the findings of law enforcement officials.

Remembering Michael Thulani Mbana and His Political Career

Mbana was an established figure within the DA’s local political structures in the Free State. According to the party, he joined the organisation in 2017 and devoted himself to political activism, community service and strengthening its grassroots presence.

His political work involved participating in election campaigns, supporting party organisation and representing residents through municipal government. Over time, he became the DA’s Metsimaholo caucus leader, a position that placed him among the party’s key representatives in the municipality.

Mbana also served as a councillor and held the position of Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Spatial Planning and Human Settlements during the period when the DA was part of the municipal government.

The portfolio dealt with important aspects of local administration, including spatial development and housing-related matters. These responsibilities placed his work within areas of direct importance to residents and the future development of their communities.

As the DA’s Ward 14 candidate, Mbana was preparing to contest the upcoming local government elections. His death has therefore been felt not only within the party but also among those involved in the municipality’s political and electoral activities.

Free State DA leader Roy Jankielsohn described his passing as a devastating loss, highlighting Mbana’s commitment to ensuring that the voices of Metsimaholo residents were heard.

The party extended condolences to his wife, family, friends and colleagues, remembering him as a dedicated public servant who worked to strengthen community representation.

Police Investigation Continues After Fatal Shooting

Free State police commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia activated the Zamdela Trio Task Team and the Serious Organised Crime Unit to investigate the murder, trace the suspects and establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Investigators are working to determine who carried out the attack and whether there were circumstances beyond those currently known. Police have not confirmed whether Mbana was targeted because of his political activities, and no motive should be assumed before the investigation produces further evidence.

Authorities have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses information that could assist detectives to come forward.

Information can be provided to investigating officer Captain Sandile Dladla at 082 453 6245 or 073 226 6788. Members of the public can also contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit information anonymously through the MySAPS application.

The DA has expressed confidence that the investigation will establish the circumstances of Mbana’s death and help bring those responsible to justice. The party also acknowledged messages of condolence from representatives of the African National Congress and the Freedom Front Plus.

A Loss for the Metsimaholo Community

Mbana’s death comes at a significant moment for local politics, with the November 4 elections approaching. However, the investigation must establish whether the timing has any connection to the killing rather than relying on assumptions.

For his family, colleagues and the residents he represented, his death marks the loss of a public figure whose political career was built around local government and community involvement.

As police continue their investigation, questions remain about why Mbana was killed and who was responsible. For now, his party and colleagues are remembering his years of service while awaiting answers from authorities.

His legacy in Metsimaholo will be associated with his work as a councillor, caucus leader and advocate for community representation. The search for answers continues as those who knew him mourn his passing.
